| A Taste of Clover Honey | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Lady Clover Honey has taken her female persona to Television, (as the first and only Transgendered correspondent on a nationally broadcasted series) Carnegie Hall, Radio and the Political Lobby - along with her performances and party appearances. "I'm not one of those performers who wear only make-up on stage." says Lady Clover Honey (also known as Clover Welsh) "I spend a great deal of my time dressing as and expressing myself as a female." Clover says that it is just more comfortable, natural and fun that way. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Clover was born into a nurturing family that lived in a suburban town in Northern New Jersey and Clover eventually found her way across the Hudson River to become a sweet blossom in the New York City social and nightlife swirl. Clover started doing drag at Halloween and then at Pride Parades and events. She eventually found that there were more women's than men's clothes in her closet and that she was living more and more en femme. She named her lady-like persona Clover Honey, which loosley translated means "abundance of sweetness." She later was advised to add the Lady title so people wouldn't confuse her name with the food product sweetener. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Clover emerged as a Drag personality by hostessing and performing at NYC's Community organizations, local cafes and nightspots. She became a fixture within Queer Society, making regular appearances at Dances, Parties, Media Awards, Art Gallery Openings and annual NYC 5th Avenue parades like the Easter Parade and the Gay Pride Parade. She did performances in both in funky undergrownd dowtown haunts and glitzy upscale places like the Waldoft and Carnegie Hall - where Lady Clover Honey's female impersonation was grandly highlighted when she was given the opportunity to be part of dance production numbers during a concert of the prestigious NYC Gay Men's Chorus in March 2000 and then in June 2000. "Wearing my gowns and jewels spotlighted on the famous Carnegie stage is something I'll never forget - With the huge audience of thousands in front of me, not to mention having all those gorgeous and talented Chorus Men singing behind me!" notes the Lady. Clover ultimately made history as the first Transgendered person have the esteemed role of Maestro Conductor at Carnegie in December of 2005, where she was given the baton to lead the Chorus, the Orchestra and the audiance, in a fabulous sing-a-long. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It was Clover's visibility at these events that brought her to the attention of television producers. In 2002, she was invited to join Under the Pink Carpet, a national LGBT themed news & entertainment TV program as a correspondent. According to the LGBT History Project, Lady Clover Honey is the first openly Transgendered correspondent to regularly star on a national TV show and only the second Drag Queen (after RuPaul and her show.) Under the Pink Carpet is presented by WYBE-TV (a PBS affiliate) and was broadcast throughout the country on PBS stations by the National Education Television Association (NETA), as well as on the Free Speech TV (FSTV) dish and cable network. Under the Pink Carpet is broadcast in Canada and Austrailia on Out TV cable network. "We just kept running into her," said Tony Sawicki, the show's producer and lead correspondent. "I knew she was a girl who got around. But more than that, she had poise, intelligence, character and a genuinely likable personality." Adds Sawicki. "It turns out she was designer tailor-made for the job." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| But having a Drag correspondent was a bold move. The LGBT Historic Archives in Washington DC noted that this was the first and only time a Trans reporter was seen on a national American TV show. RuPaul was the first Drag Queen to host a show in 1996. In 1948, Milton Berle was the first man impersonate a woman on TV. The prestigious mainstream newspaper, The San Francisco Examiner had this to say about Clover as a Drag Journalist: "Having a Drag Queen reporter could itself be seen as a political statement of sorts considering Drag Queens, whose flamboyance was once not only embraced but celebrated by the Gay community at large, have recently been made to feel like outsiders by their Gay brothers." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| You may think that being a drag news correspondent would put one in a disadvantage, with people not taking you seriosly, but Clover insists that is not the case with her. "People remember me." says Clover. "I was recently surprised when Rosie O'Donnell recalled me with all the people she meets." Lady Clover Honey also stands out in a crowd of journalists on the red carpet. "Celebrities come over to me and bypass other reporters and I've never had a problem getting anyone's attention." One of Clover's biggest thrills in being a correspondent was getting the chance to interview the legendary Jerry Herman, who wrote the music and lyrics to Brodway's Hello Dolly, Mame and La Cage aux Folle, at the premier of the revival of La Cage. Being a big Soap fan, another journalistic high point was covering the Daytime Emmy Awards. Eden Riegel, who portrays Bianca, Erica Kane's Lesbian daughter on All My Children and others said that their chats were Clover was the most fun and memorable interviews given at the awards. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

No. 24, the Transgender anti-discrimination law enacted in 2002. Clover also participated in lobbying the NY State legislature in Albany on the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA). She also holds seats on the Board of Direcotrs of the Stonwall Democrats of NYC and the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Caucus, providing an inclusive Transgendered viewpoint. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
